Many people ignore symptoms that seem minor like headache, minor back pain. But certain warning signs mean your brain or spine needs urgent care. Knowing the difference could save your life or prevent permanent disability.
I, Dr. Saud Ahmed, Consultant Neurosurgeon am sharing the 10 warning signs that should never be ignored.
1. Sudden, Severe Headache “The Worst Headache of Your Life”
If you experience a headache that comes on suddenly and feels more severe than any you have had before, go to the emergency room immediately. This is the classic sign of a subarachnoid hemorrhage bleeding around the brain. It is a medical emergency.
Do not wait. Do not take a painkiller and sleep it off.
2. Headache With Vomiting and Vision Problems
A headache combined with vomiting, blurred vision, or sensitivity to light can indicate increased pressure inside the skull. This can be caused by a brain tumour, hydrocephalus, or bleeding. It needs urgent evaluation.
3. Weakness or Numbness on One Side of the Body
If one arm, one leg, or one side of your face suddenly feels weak or numb, this is a stroke symptom until proven otherwise. Every minute matters. Get medical help immediately.
Even if the numbness comes and goes, it needs to be investigated, it may be a TIA (transient ischaemic attack), which is a warning of a larger stroke to come.
4. Back Pain With Leg Pain, Numbness, or Weakness
Simple back pain is common and usually not dangerous. But when back pain travels down the leg, causes numbness in the leg or foot, or makes the leg weak then it suggests a nerve is being compressed in the spine.
If you also have difficulty controlling your bladder or bowel, it is better to get it examined as early as possible. This is called cauda equina syndrome and requires on time surgery.
5. Seizures
A seizure for the first time in an adult always needs investigation. It can be caused by a brain tumour, scar tissue, abnormal blood vessels, or other serious conditions. A neurosurgeon needs to review your brain scan.
Even if the seizure seemed “mild” or you recovered quickly, do not ignore it.
6. Loss of Consciousness or Confusion After a Head Injury
After any head injury, even if it seemed minor, watch for loss of consciousness, increasing confusion, worsening headache, or vomiting. These signs mean there may be bleeding inside the skull.
Children are especially vulnerable. Any child who loses consciousness after a head injury needs immediate medical evaluation.
7. Progressive Weakness in Both Legs
If both legs are gradually becoming weaker with difficulty climbing stairs, dragging feet, or feeling unsteady, this can indicate compression of the spinal cord. This is different from a slipped disc and requires neurosurgical assessment.
8. Difficulty Speaking, Swallowing, or Understanding Speech
Problems with speaking or swallowing that come on suddenly suggest a brain or brainstem problem. These symptoms need immediate evaluation, do not wait to see if they improve on their own.
9. Vision Loss or Double Vision
Sudden vision loss, double vision, or a curtain coming across your vision can be caused by a tumour pressing on the optic nerve or a problem with the blood supply to the brain. An ophthalmologist and neurosurgeon both need to be involved.
10. A Lump or Swelling on the Head or Spine After Injury
After a significant head injury or fall, any visible swelling over the skull or spine needs to be evaluated. It may indicate a fracture or fluid collection that needs surgical drainage.
